In the spirit of the man dubbed "Mr. Mt. Washington," Alton Weagle, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is hosting a celebration of firsts as part of the 150th Anniversary Season.
Weagle holds more firsts up Mt. Washington than any other person, including walking up the Auto Road barefoot, backwards and pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with a 100-pound bag of sugar. In his spirit, several other first ascents are planned including a woman attempting the climb on a unicycle, a woman on roller skis, a man being pushed in a telephone booth and a man who intends to drive his car entirely in reverse.
Additionally, the first 300 visitors who drive themselves up the Auto Road that day will receive a pair of Groucho Marx glasses to join in the fun.
Other activities and a ceremony honoring Alton Weagle are also planned. For more information about Alton Weagle Day, visit the Mt. Washington Auto Road website.
