Local Maple Syrup on Sale at The Lodge at Jackson Village!

They’ve done it again!  Visiting the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation  is always full of sweet surprises.  The maple trees  in their ‘Hundred Acre Wood’ have finished being tapped this season, and the sap boiled down in the sugar house.  The result?  A bumper crop of liquid gold, also known as New Hampshire Maple Syrup! Wow … is it good!  Ask any farmer and you will find that some years are good for syrup production, others not so much.  It all depends on the local conditions, such as the temperature, number of sunny days, amount of rain or snowfall, the combination of warm days and cold nights, and even the individual tree itself. Conditions this year were a perfect storm of the ideal in all categories, and resulted in a great crop of maple syrup, sugar, candy and maple butter. We are selling various quantities of their syrup again this year at The Lodge.  The profits go to the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, a really “sweet” cause! http://www.believeinbooks.org/

Winter Skiing Ends Today ... Spring Skiing Takes its Place!!

Today may be the last day of winter skiing at Wildcat Mountain, but the Spring ski season at Tuckerman Ravine is just gearing up!! What a fantastic winter it has been. With a total annual snowfall of 214” and counting at Wildcat so far, it has been a fabulous season to say the least. Part of me is sad to see it go; the other half need only step out the front door today at The Lodge to see the bulbs poking their heads through the newly exposed soil, and the sights, smells and sounds of spring abounding everywhere. I am hooked!  Several guests are at Tuck skiing today, and it couldn’t be more perfect. We’ll get ‘the scoop’ firsthand tonight when they return. What a blessing it is to live and work here at the base of Mount Washington. After 9 years and counting, I still pinch myself to make sure that my good fortune is for real!!

Our Hearts go out to Boston ...Our hearts go out to Boston…

This week my blog is sad as I watch scenes from the Boston Marathon with a combination of shock, horror, indignation and concern. So many of our guests at The Lodge are from the Boston area, and many of them are runners who participate in the annual Mount Washington Race, as well as others throughout the year, including the iconic Boston Marathon. I am sure that many of them whom we have come to know and care about were at the scene yesterday, and we will be praying that all is well with them and their families. Of course none of us are ‘well’ after such a thing, but we must come together as a nation, like we did after 9-11. God bless America, and may He give our president the wisdom to navigate through the treacherous days ahead. Our hearts go out to all who were touched by this senseless tragedy.

Out of Town but Not Out of Snow!

The Lodge Lady is out of town this week, enjoying unexpected summer-like weather in her old stomping grounds in New York.  However, my sources tell me that winter is still very much alive and well in Jackson, and folks at The Lodge are still enjoying freshly groomed XC trails in Intervale!!  Not only that, but Wildcat will be receiving 3-6” of snow tonight, and a bit more tomorrow. This is hard for me to fathom as I walk barefoot across my mother’s yard picking daffodils and watching robins frolic on the lawn, but rest assured that if you still have a hankering for skiing., you need only to head for the Jackson Hills or give The Lodge a call!  Sometimes a trip of only a few hours can seem like a world away! Check it out for yourself and find out how great spring skiing can be!  I'm heading back there in a few days myself. As nice as spiring is, I've still got winter in my bones!
