Return of the Pumpkin People

The Return of the Pumpkin People

The population of Jackson, NH consists of about 884 Yankees and other assorted folks. Unless it happens to be the month of October, that is, in which case the head count swells to a whopping 932 … or thereabouts! The reason? Pumpkin People!! Check out this year’s zany crop of vegetal vagabonds …

For the last 24 years, magical, intriguing Pumpkin People have been coming to the White Mountains of Jackson, NH in time to greet the changing foliage and the hordes of ‘Leaf Peepers’ who come to view them. Just how they first arrived or where they originally came from is still a mystery, but year after year these wonderful, colorful characters show up on our doorsteps, in front of businesses and in every conceivable posture and setting all over town. It happens in the blink of an eye. September 30 is a day like any other, with the sun setting at a noticeably early 6:29 pm. Then suddenly, on the First of October, it rises upon scores of pumpkin-bedecked faces in the midst of amusing and playful antics. No one sees them come into town in the dark of night, but we welcome them back with open arms!

The Pumpkin People announce themselves on a map of our village, their whereabouts marked for all to see. During the month of October you will see people walking all over town, maps in hand, scouting them out so they don’t miss a single one, and voting for their favorites. It is good, clean fun during my favorite -- and I think one of the most beautiful -- seasons of the year.

My husband and I decided to hit the ole ‘Pumpkin Trail’ yesterday, viewing most of the sights. He drove, and I was the co-pilot, giving directions and snapping tons of colorful photos! I’d love to take you on a tour to view them, too!

We might as well start right outside the front door of our inn, where Mary Pumpkin, er … I mean Mary Poppins awaits us, umbrella and satchel in hand. She seems to be wearing some very familiar clothes … in fact, they’re mine! Thank goodness for that umbrella, which has come in mighty handy so far. I t has been heck of a rainy week here in New England!

Rapumpzel awaits us next over at the local deli, her long tresses trailing from the second floor.

Across the street at a private home is a display that is always awesome and ‘over the top’. DD puts on quite a show, but then, everything she does is always top notch. Don’t you just love her ‘Pick Your Own’ apples?! This year DD’s theme was Pirates of the Carribbean, and here are a few shots of her labor of love:

Over at the Wentworth Inn are Johnny and June Carter Cash, with their song “Jackson” (how appropriate!) playing in the background!

Going up past Jackson Falls, which is still flowing mightily from all this rain, we come to the Carter Notch Inn, whose always off-color and slightly risqué displays are always a hoot-and-a-half! This year they made a “wind farm” … a take off on a local happening, just north of us, where a huge wind farm is in the making. There will be 33 gigantic windmills erected, and all summer we have been watching the 140’ blades drive by on their way to the site. Dick and Sally’s wind farm, however, was of a slightly different nature …!

And talk about ‘hoots’ … these adorable owls are perching outside our local florist shop!

Near the covered bridge is a pumpkin watering can, sprinkling what is left of our summer blooms. Nearby at our local beauty salon, Debony has some of the happiest and sweetest flowers around!

This Magician cuts a woman in half … hope he’s successful! Don’t you just love the feet coming out of the left side of the box?

Story Land is our local kids attraction, a mini Disney Land started over 50 years ago by a local couple. It has grown into a major destination, full of good. Clean wholesome family fun. Is it any wonder that they chose a fairy tale theme?

This butternut squash plays the part perfectly in our local massage therapist’s rendition of Edward Munch’s painting, The Scream. Sorry the photo is a bit skewed … her massage shop is on a sharp curve near the covered bridge and there were cars behind us when I quickly snapped the picture!

Frankenstein, The Mummy and Count Dracula regale us over at the Covered Bridge House B&B.

These adorable little fraulines wave a warm welcome at the Bernerhof Inn:

Stevie Wonder plays his keyboard, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves adorn a front porch, and the Smurfs frolic on a golf course.Who can resist the happy chef cooking away at the Wildcat Tavern, the Up, Up and Away display at the White Mountain Puzzle shop, or John Lennon and Yoko One as they Give Peace a Chance? There are a few more … a water skier, a Sumo wrestler and Beetlejuice:

In the display of Cruella Deville over at the Inn at Ellis River, our neighbors spent fully as much time creating the beautiful and elaborate set as they did on the Pumpkin People themselves. What dedication!

Let’s Give Thanks …. for our Military Men!

Musicians play a large part in the Pumpkin People World … Here are Elvis, The Beatles and the Jackson Five on their recent trips to Jackson!

October Pumpkin People may be fun and games, but like us, they are not immune to tragedies … Last year  the Shannon Door Irish Pub re-enacted Finnegan’s Wake.

Here are two local celebrities: Tom and Atticus.

In response to the tremendous amount of roadwork and construction that has taken place in our area, these clever construction workers work near a local bridge:
A hunter snoozes while the local game stops by to check him out. To his right, the Addams Family makes an appearance in town:

So, that’s a little look at what we do here in the mountains to celebrate the fall. Come on up and take a peek for yourself!

The Leaves they are a'changin

I think it was only yesterday afternoon  that I was standing at the front desk and looking outside, when I commented that 'fall colors seem to be  coming in late  this year' ...  Well, forget that I ever said such a silly thing, because, (as they say), "What a difference a day can make!" As I look out the front door this morning, the beautiful maple tree near the iconic New England weathered barn over at The Thompson House is magically tinged with orange and red ... the kind of color that will creep into the leaves in succeeding days transforming it into a deep and triumphant scarlet ...  the stuff with which calendars and coffee table books are filled this time of year!  Here at The Lodge in Jackson, NH, we await the arrival of the Pumpkin People next week, and the many folks who will come to view them and our magnificent foliage.  We hope that you will be one of them!

Alton Weagle Day - Saturday, May 28

In the spirit of the man dubbed "Mr. Mt. Washington," Alton Weagle, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is hosting a celebration of firsts as part of the 150th Anniversary Season.

Weagle holds more firsts up Mt. Washington than any other person, including walking up the Auto Road barefoot, backwards and pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with a 100-pound bag of sugar. In his spirit, several other first ascents are planned including a woman attempting the climb on a unicycle, a woman on roller skis, a man being pushed in a telephone booth and a man who intends to drive his car entirely in reverse.

Additionally, the first 300 visitors who drive themselves up the Auto Road that day will receive a pair of Groucho Marx glasses to join in the fun.

Other activities and a ceremony honoring Alton Weagle are also planned. For more information about Alton Weagle Day, visit the Mt. Washington Auto Road website.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road is now open daily, weather permitting, for guided tours and for private vehicles. For more information about operations or the special events for our 150th Anniversary, visit our website or call 603.466.3988.

A Stitch in Time

For awhile there, I was beginning to think that knitting was becoming a thing of the past, a real ‘lost art’! Everywhere you looked knitting stores were systematically going out of business, stores that historically carried yarns were shutting down those departments or drastically diminishing the choices. But lately, knitting enthusiasts have been coming out of the closet and starting knitting circles all over the Mount Washington Valley! From the Jackson Women’s Sewing Club, which meets the first Tuesday of each month; to the Jackson Public library (now in its glorious new building; to the wonderful new knitting store in North Conway (Close Knit Sisters) … to even Starbucks, which has a knitting circle every Wednesday night from 6-8 (with a free cup of coffee!).

Tonight is the inaugural Knitting night at the library from 6-8 pm. Everyone with a fondness for wool is invited to attend abd to bring your knitting project to work on, settle into a comfortable chair, sip some tea and enjoy an evening with fellow knitters. It will be hosted by Kim, who willpoint out many invaluable resources that the library provides for both knitters and crochet-ers.

Close Knit Sisters is the knitting store located near the Soyfire Candle in North Conway. Run by two close-“knit” sisters Zoe and Cheryl, this store is their long-time dream come true. They carry lots of yarn and knitting supplies, books and accessories, and have the expertise to help you out of any close-knit scrape you get yourself into. Several times I have taken my projects into their shop and they are always willing and able to help solve a problem! The last 2 hours of each day is a knitting social … just show up with your project and meet others knitters … all of whom seem to be lovely interesting people (of course!).

Next year Dick Devellian will be headed over to Lake Geneva WI representing his home state of New Hampshire in the nationals. He will have the chance to delight over 250-thousand spectators. Global Climate Change - A View from the Rockpile

Mount Washington Observatory Summit Adventure: Global Climate Change - A View from the Rockpile

January 29, 30
Mount Washington Observatory Summit Adventures offer the exclusive opportunity to experience Mount Washington in winter without a technical mountaineering ascent. Travel to and from the summit is made possible by snow tractor transportation, and cozy overnight accommodations are provided at the summit weather station. The educational value of the visit is enhanced by expert instruction in a variety of subjects, ranging from mountain photography to meteorology, climate change to cooking.

On this trip, Mark Van Baalen (geologist at Harvard University) and Tim Allen (geologist at Keene State College) will explain recent developments in the science of climate change. Today the data supporting the fact of ongoing climate change are unassailable, yet our ability to predict future climates is not as robust as we would like. The Mount Washington Observatory is a proud contributor to the instrumental record documenting our climate, while the mountain itself stands as a living example of the interplay between geology and climate over longer time periods. This workshop will investigate these issues.

Special guests ... dear friends ... just like family!

Special guests ... dear friends ... just like family!  Two of our favorite guests are back here this week, two sisters named Gene and Eloise. We have come to cherish their annual January visits, when they arrive with their cross-country skis, their luggage and their indomitable spirits, ready for life's continuing adventures! Gene just turned 90 last month, and it will forever be a lifelong regret of mine that I was not able to make it to her party on Central Park West, NYC on the 22nd. Having just been away from the Lodge for more than a week visiting family, and riding up to NH with my son Noah as he returned from college, it was nigh on impossible to get back to NY two days later for the big 90 bash.  But I have seen photos, and it was a party to remember for sure! Famous artists, writers, dancers and more are Gene's lifelong friends. They travelled the world over to celebrate her milestone birthday. Both she and Eloise are role models for me, and I talk about them admiringly the rest of the year!

All Good Things Come to an End

Unfortunately, all good things eventually DO come to an end ... but I suppose their transitory nature helps make them that much more precious.  A week before Christmas I flew down to Baltimore, MD to spend a few days with our son Noah at  Johns Hopkins University, where he is a student.  While he was finishing up with finals, projects and research papers, I was in my glory, keeping myself busy by going to museums and book stores. Heaven!! I slept on his dorm room floor each night and had a thoroughly fantastic time.  We broke up the 12-hour drive back to New Hampshire by spending a few days at my mom's house in New York. There were Christmas parties to attend, my brother's birthday to celebrate, and a visit from my sister who lives in Florida. Since our return back to the Lodge, Noah has been home with us as 'part of the family', just like in the old days (before college!). And for the last month he has been working at his old job, the facial recognition company where he is a software engineer. But today the inevitable happened as he left for his return to college. I was up at 5:00 making him sandwiches and snacks for the long drive, helped him pack up his car, and at 6:30 am stood waving in the dark as I watched his taillights drive out completely of sight. Sigh!  It has been a wonderful interlude of having Noah back. It won't happen too many more times before his worklife and future marriage intervene, but until then,  I always cherish every moment!

Pretty cold here this week ... fortunately no wind!  Both thermometers read -20 degrees ... but when you get down that far, what's the difference?  It all pretty much just feels cold!!   Our son Josh made snow ... lots of it ... by throwing a cup of boiling water into the air.  It created voluminous blankets of snow ... who would've thought that THAT much potential snow would fit into such a little cup!!

Ice Sculptures Still Surviving

The magnificent ice sculptures on the veranda of the Wentworth Country Inn, left over from the 16th annual ice carving competition at the beginning of the month, have enjoyed unusual longevity this year due to the extremely frigid arctic temperatures that New Hampshire and the rest of the northeast has been experiencing these last few weeks.  Low temps of 20 below zero each of the last few evenings has guaranteed solar immunity to these beautiful works of art. Stop by to take a look and check out the various entries, each more beautiful than the next!

Mount Washington's summit is visited by a quarter-million people in summer, but its winter secrets are known only to a hardy few. When the Cog Railway and Mt. Washington Auto Road close for the season, the only way to access the peak is via a technical mountaineering ascent or a trip with the Mount Washington Observatory. Made possible by snow tractor transportation, these guided trips include informal educational sessions with an expert Observatory educator, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Observatory's weather station, a hot lunch, and all the famous weather extremes of this legendary mountain during its most demanding, most alluring season.

Ryan Montbleau Band in Concert at Fryeburg Academy

7:30 pm
Averaging over 200 gigs per year for the past few years, Ryan Montbleau Band has generated the kind of buzz that only surrounds a talented artist on the verge. Emerging onto the national music scene from his home base of Boston, Ryan Montbleau has been described as something of a Martin Sexton by way of Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder. Yet Ryan Montbleau Band's music is difficult to pigeon-hole or neatly categorize. It is original yet familiar-a fresh sound full of firmly-rooted ingredients, including Americana, folk, blues, ragtime and '70's R&B and soul. Whereas the band's intriguing instrumentation and arrangements (not to mention top notch chops) help to create this unique sound, all is fi rmly anchored by Montbleau's water-tight lyrics and unmistakable voice. Tickets: $20-Adults/$10-Students. At the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on the campus of Fryeburg Academy, 18 Bradley Street, Fryeburg, ME.    (207) 935-9232
