Be Prepared!

I always check the Summit Conditions on Mount Washington, and in today’s weather report I noticed something I hadn’t seen for quite awhile. It was a hiker’s Hypothermia Warning. Yes, it IS August, and last week on much of the planet it was hotter than Hades, but anyone who is hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire – even at this time of year -- should be aware that Mount Washington is a special case unto itself, and never take it for granted nor hike it unprepared. August means nothing up on Mount Washington! For example yesterday (with the wind chill factor), it was only 19 degrees F! Granted, the wind speed was only 24 mph, but storms can and do come in quickly and the top wind speed in the last 24 hours was almost 75 mph. Today, if you find yourself on Mount Washington, whether you climbed, took the cog or drove up to the summit in your car or a van, you will be part of history as the Auto Road celebrates 149 years of continuous service. However you get there, though, don’t forget to wear plenty of layers; it could be cold.
